My Nana Susie’s Dress

I never had the pleasure of growing up with grandparents. Both of my grandmothers passed away before I was born or when I was a baby; but I did have my Nana Susie. She was my parent’s neighbor at some point in the late 80’s and she basically became our adopted grandma. She unfortunately passed away when I was in elementary school, but I do remember that she loved turquoise jewelry and gave me my first few necklaces (my turquoise obsession started early!) and she was a sweet, kind woman.

A few weeks ago, her daughter Betsey reached out and asked if I was interested in some of Susie’s old clothes. I immediately said yes and anxiously waited for the box to arrive. As most of you know, I love vintage clothing and have been thrifting for years, but receiving something that had a personal connection to me was on a completely different level. The box was filled with gorgeous dresses, gloves, clutches and tops. I only have a handful of memories of my Nana Susie now, and it was truly special seeing a different side to her. The pieces fit perfectly and I fell in love with one dress in particular. This maroon and white striped gown with a matching velvet bag was the perfect mix of vintage and modern. The material is still in perfect condition and so well made. I paired the dress with a leather jacket and platform oxfords with minimal jewelry. Below I have a picture of Susie with her husband that Betsey gave my parents—she looks so beautiful and fashionable!

I still feel a little besides myself that I have the opportunity to have a piece of my Nana Susie with me as an adult and I’m extremely grateful that Betsey shared these pieces with me. Happy Tuesday! xo

I don’t know what to say, except you look beautiful in it! So glad those things have a second life with you. Hugs and love.
