I’m currently sitting in a coffee shop wearing ripped jeans, sneakers, a graphic tee and top knot – not your typical corporate office look, but my work dresscode is far from normal. When I worked a 9-5, I wore heels, blazers and was dressed up 90% of the time; but now that I’m freelance, some days I’m running around to meetings dressed up, or wearing sneakers and jeans on a photoshoot set. Despite what my schedule might be, the overall theme of my work ensembles are comfort. I have pretty much nixed heels from my wardrobe because they’re never practical for my 10+ hour days, and I look for pieces that can transition from daytime meetings to nighttime events.
On the Fall/Winter 17 runways, we saw the growing theme of banker suits. While the corporate dresscode might have been turning more casual the past couple of years, this season will be all about dressing to the 9’s with suits, power pieces and bold color combinations. For my interpretation of a power suit, I paired these vintage green trousers with a an oversized belted shirtdress and a structured vintage blazer. The contrasting vertical stripes help streamline the oversized ensemble and still elongate the body sans heels. The key to wearing an oversized suit or pieces, is to wear complimentary colors and pair various proportions. For ideas on what colors and patterns mix well, check out my previous Print Mixing tutorial here.
I encourage you to try something new this fall for work – say goodbye to the pencil skirts, heels and uncomfortable pieces. Integrate wearable pieces like loafers, trousers and oversized tops to your closet so you don’t have to worry about messing with your outfit throughout the day and can easily run from meetings to date night in a snap! Also, if you’re looking to transition this look from day to night, take off the shirtdress and rock a bralette or lacey top with the trousers and blazer. It’s a super sexy, tomboy mix! You can also throw on a strappy heel if you want to dress up things! What do you plan on wearing to the office this fall? Let me know! xo
