Meet Clary and Sam. Friends since middle school, roommates, business partners and the cool kids of Phoenix Fashion Week’s Emerging Designer Challenge. They are the masterminds behind LoinCloth Los Angeles, one of the twelve lines for Phoenix Fashion Week.
It all started just a few years ago when Clary and Sam were in college. Clary, with an entrepreneurial mindset, brought up the idea of a clothing line to Sam. After college and living in Australia, they decided to take the plunge and start their long anticipated t-shirt line. With minimal fashion experience, money, these dreamers had a ‘penny and a plan’.
Friday, August 9th, I had the opportunity to sit down with the guys behind LCLA and find out the real story behind the cool clothes and cali persona.
Why did you decide to do Phoenix Fashion Week?
“We decided it was a great opportunity after attending an event and talking with people. The main goal is to be able to connect our brand with our customers. When we started, our brand was everywhere, and it’s been hard to make it a direct brand message but PHXFW has been able to help with that. They have also given us the large platform to expand our brand and be around other great designers in all markets.”
What has been the biggest challenge thus far with PHXFW?
“Really putting your brand into a concise message. When we have to present in front of the other designers it really puts into perspective what we want. Our message is the “trials and tribulations of pursuing your dreams”.”
If you weren’t in fashion what would you be doing?
“Living the life,” jokes the guys, “we would be working a 9-5 job, possibly married and be an accountant. But we didn’t want that (typical) lifestyle and now we get to do what we want to do.”
What has been an inspiration for your line?
“Hollywood has been a huge inspiration for us. It’s such a great place because everyone there is pursuing their dream. It has such an influx of people and a full scope of types of people too that you get a bit of everything.
What are 3 words to describe your brand?
Ambitious, Grimy and Young
What is your favorite piece in your collection?
Sam: Green Chinos (coming up in fashion week)
Clary: Ocean dipped oxford (pictured below)
What do you want LoinCloth to be remembered for from Phoenix Fashion Week?
Sam: “That we have something good enough to reach a large audience!”
Clary: “That we brought everything to the table!”
