It has been a busy week over here in SAK land, but I’m so excited to share today’s Wear It Wednesday tutorial! I love mixing prints and I’m always trying new print and color combinations. Today I’m sharing five different guidelines to follow when mixing prints. I know it can seem intimidating, and even a little kooky, but trust me – you’ll be a print mixing pro in no time! xo
1. The Big Print Mix
My staple print mix combination is stripes and florals. Stripe prints can basically act as a neutral in any print mix combination. They go great with more intricate patterns like floral, cheetah, snakeskin, polka dots – the bold consistency of the stripes balance out the chaos. I added a third print in the boots, but since it’s in the same color family as the top, it’s a nice flow without seeming too crazy.

2. The Monochromatic Print Mix
Still a little nervous with mixing prints? Stay in one color, or a monochromatic color family. Here I paired this blue/greyish watercolor print blazer with a striped grey wide leg jumpsuit. My accessories were both blue hues to balance out the look. With a monochromatic look, it instantly looks chic, so this is a great way to ease into mixing prints.

3. The Same Print Mix
For a more classy look, stay with one print! You can do two striped or floral pieces and it’s a really simple way to still mix prints. My tip for pairing the same print is do various sizes of the print or have the print (aka the stripes) going in different directions. I did a tight pinstripe on the blouse and a wider stripe on bottom – it draws the eye up and down without any confusion.

4. The Big & Small Print Mix
Now, I normally never pair red and green together, but since this is a complementary color combo, and the prints are contrasting enough, it’s the perfect pair! Use a defined print, like this floral dress, with an abstract print such as the camo jacket. I did a similar thing with the striped jumpsuit in #2 – the focus will be on the defined print and the other piece is a nice finishing accent.

5. The Triple Print Mix
Feeling like a print mix pro now? Throw a mix of prints together but make sure one is large (cheetah), small (polka dot) and structured (stripes).These balance each other out and don’t feel like you’re looking at an intense art project.
