My Superhero Cape

Raise your hand if you think I’ve worn this leopard fur coat too many times this season *raises hand. I think I’ve been wearing it on overload lately because I always felt a little self conscious about my fashion-forward pieces in Arizona. I definitely felt like I was over-dressing or too “fashion” sometimes when I lived there, but now that I’m in New York and stopped caring what random people on the street thought of my outfits, my leopard coat has been on repeat!

I have always taken fashion risks and experimented with outfits growing up, but sometimes it was, and still is, hard to completely dive in when you feel the pressure of fitting in with peers. Am I right? Some days I want to wear every piece of jewelry I own, mix and match all of the prints and just look like a walking, obnoxious billboard. But other days, I wear all black, no jewelry and don’t do my hair. I love that I can be fashion can allow me to act impulsive and how certain pieces and outfits can sky rocket my self confidence and attitude, even when I’m having a kind of “meh” day.

This leopard coat is just that piece. It might sound silly, but I feel like when I’m walking down the streets of New York in this coat, I am embracing my inner Carrie Bradshaw, Blair Waldorf and Madonna all in one – I feel like I have “made it” and that I’m untouchable. It’s kind of silly that a vintage oversized coat can do that for me. But it’s also simply amazing knowing that clothing has that power. Fashion has acted as my scapegoat and hype man, and I have realized that the less I care about what other people think or judge about my outfits, the more creative and free I feel.
