How To Make Your Lipstick Last All Day

Lipstick has become a beauty staple for me the past few years. I wear it almost every day, and I get a lot of questions from friends and readers which types of lipsticks I wear and how I actually make it last all damn day. My friends are always pretty surprised that I can go most of the day, while eating and drinking, and still have my lips pretty much fully intact. So today, I am sharing  5 steps that will make you lipstick stand the test of time…or until you decide to wash your face. See below!

1. Exfoliate and moisturize
I wash my face every night, and I always make sure to exfoliate my lips because wearing lipstick as often as I do, it can easily dry out my lips. Some people use lip scrubs, but I found that using  a washcloth and water works just as well and is a cheaper, easier way to exfoliate my lips. Before I go to bed I always put on a very moisturizing lip balm. Vaseline (regular or lip balm)  works best because it locks in the moisture and my lips still feel soft in the morning. Other brands I use are: Smith’s, Hempz and Burt’s Bees.

2. Prime area
I have seen several beauty bloggers, or even my friends, apply lip balm to their lips immediately before they put on lipstick, but I actually say ‘no’ to this! Since I moisturize my lips the night before, and apply a regular chapstick when I wake up – I don’t put any balms on my lips immediately before because I want my lipstick to stick on my lips – which works best if they’re a little on the drier side. Instead, I’ll apply a little lip primer, or even just foundation or concealer to prime and prep the lip area.

3. Line LipsSimplyAudreeKate.lip.2
When I was younger and I would watch my mom do her makeup, she always used lip liner before she applied lipstick – but I didn’t follow suit when I started wearing lipstick because for some reason I thought it was an “old lady” way of doing lipstick and I wanted my make-up routine to be a fast as possible. I finally changed my ways and I will never go back. Moms really do know best, am I right?! I can visibly see and feel a difference  about my lipstick if I don’t line before applying lipstick. I like lip liner because it acts as a base, defines my lip line and I don’t have any “bleeding” from my lipstick. I start at my cupid’s bow and make a little ‘X’ – I picked this trick up a few years ago and it helps create that perfect little bow. From the ‘X’, I line the rest of my lips.

4. Fill in the linerSimplyAudreeKate.lip.3If you just do the lip liner and and apply lipstick, the middle of your lips will fade faster, so I always completely fill in my lips with liner.

5. Apply lipstick and outline with linerSimplyAudreeKate.lip.4Now it’s time for lipstick! In this tutorial I am wearing MAC smoked purple – I have found that matte lipsticks work best for lasting all day. I know the Kylie Lip Kits have become really popular lately, and even matte lipsticks, and it’s because a glossy/shiny lipstick will smudge faster and stick to your glass, food ,etc. but with a matte finish, you have a better chance of having it last all day!  After I apply the lipstick, I use my liner again to re-define the outside of my lips and blend it all together.

Also, I do have a darker lip liner that matches the Smoked Purple that I typically use, but since this color is such a deep shade, I also like using a lighter berry shade to brighten it up  and make it more wearable for spring!
